Best Conditioner for Blonde Hair – Deva

It’s not often that you find a color-depositing conditioner for blonde hair. I tried Deva Care One Condition a few weeks ago and love it. Deva Blonde One Condition is made by the same company as my beloved Deva Curl products. It has a purple tint to neutralize yellow and brassy tones, while still providing rich, weightless moisture to your hair. Deva Blonde One Condition is perfect for color treated or natural blondes, as well as silver haired beauties.

Best Body Balm and Salve – Egyptian Magic

best body balm

Egyptian Magic is exactly what it claims to be: magic. If the simple but effective ingredients of Olive Oil, Bees Wax, Honey Bee Pollen, Royal Jelly, Bee Propolis and Love don’t make you want to try Egyptian Magic, then let me tell you why I love it.

Egyptian Magic is completely multi-purpose. Recommended uses are as treatment for burns, scrapes, rashes, skin irritation, dryness, new scars, stretch marks, hair conditioner, eczema, lip balm and even as a personal lubricant, this balm does it all. And trust me, it works. At the first sign of a bug bite, itchy patch or mysterious looking mark I apply Egyptian Magic and it heals! I keep a bottle of Egyptian Magic on hand at all times for anything I might need it for. My dog once suffered from a nasty rash and not even the vet knew what to do. While taking antibiotics, I also applied Egyptian Magic to his rash and it went away faster. My dog also loves the taste of it for some reason, but I felt safe even if he did lick it because Egyptian Magic is natural and edible. Many mothers I know also use Egyptian Magic on their babies for diaper rash and other skin conditions.

The all natural ingredients leave nothing to mystery so you can rest assured that you are not putting anything harmful on your body. Olive Oil, Royal Jelly and Propolis are natural healing elements, and combined together with Love this formula works like magic!

Best Travel Must-Have – Airborne

Traveling and don’t want to get sick? I have a germ-proof shield for you- Airborne! It’s not new, but I can truly attest to how well Airborne works. Airborne comes in effervescent tablets, gummi lozenges, “on the go” packets and “Power Pixies” that you put on your tongue. I add it to my water on the plane and take it at least 3 times during a long flight. My favorite Airborne flavor is pink grapefruit but the lemon lime and orange are great too.

I take Airborne with me every time I step foot on a plane. In December I flew to Europe twice within 2 weeks and did not get sick. Airborne is quick, super convenient and easy and works so well. Try it before you travel or just for every day!

The best dog shampoo – John Paul Pet

I have a 7 ½ pound Maltese named Jack who is absolutely the center of my world. Needless to say, my addiction to beauty has now encompassed finding the best dog products. I recently discovered that John Paul Mitchell, iconic creator of Paul Mitchell haircare, has created a line of dog and cat shampoos, conditioners, deodorizers and detanglers called John Paul Pet that rock!

All of the products in the line use quality ingredients and are cruelty free that fact alone led me to try them. I noticed that I only needed to use just a little bit of shampoo to lather and wash Jack’s entire body and the product felt great and washed out clean. I love the John Paul Pet Super Bright Shampoo For Dogs to keep Jack sparkling white. I follow up with a few sprays of John Paul Pet Instant Detangling Spray, a no rinse grooming aid that really helps to loosen up tangles and ease brushing of Jack’s unruly hair. I also use a little bit of the John Paul Pet Tearless Gentle Shampoo for Puppies and Kittens around Jack’s face to really clean his mouth and eye area without any stinging.

The line of John Paul Pet products is vast and includes an Oatmeal shampoo, a Waterless Foam Shampoo for Dogs and Cats and different wipes for paws, ears and eyes and even teeth. My dog groomer swears that the John Paul Pet Tea Tree Shampoo actually makes fleas and ticks fall off!

John Paul Mitchell has created quality hair care for over 26 years. John Paul’s line of products for dogs and cats is no different. These products are so great you might be tempted to use them yourself!

5 Skin Myths Busted

  1. Pores can open and close. We’ve all heard the old wives tales that splashing your face with freezing cold water “opens up your pores”. The truth is, pores are not attached to any muscle so they neither expand nor contract. Cold water can lessen your pores’ oil production, but won’t lessen their size. Alternatively, when a facialist uses steam to “open your pores” what is really happening is that the sebum is loosened and oil production stimulated so that what’s clogging your pores is more easily extractable.
  2. Chocolate and French fries cause acne. Breakouts are caused by an increased production in sebum, or oil, from your skin. Food has no effect on the production of your skin’s oil; acne is caused by hormones. That’s not to say that a diet of greasy food has no consequences. There have been studies and opinions that eating too much sugar, dairy, wheat and/or carbohydrates cause digestive issues, and, in turn, acne. If you have severe digestive issues and are breaking out, you may want to talk to your doctor and get a food allergy test.
  3. Lip balms are addictive. If you find yourself applying your lip balm every 20 minutes it’s not because you have developed an unhealthy addiction to an ingredient in your lip balm. Instead, you are merely addicted to the feel of wearing something moisturizing on your lips. The skin on your lips is thin and sensitive to weather changes, dehydration and even licking your lips often, all of which may cause chapping. Applying something emollient to your lips simply feels good. This is one “addiction” that’s not bad for you, so enjoy!
  4. The higher the SPF, the better the protection. To all those that reach for the SPF 50 before going out in the sun, you might want to read this. Experts recommend choosing a sunscreen with an SPF between 15-30, depending on your skin color. Fair skin wearers should choose a sunscreen with an SPF 25-30, whereas darker skinned individuals should wear an SPF 15. Choosing an SPF of 50 over a SPF 30 only provides you with about 1-2% more SPF protection, but with a lot more chemical ingredients that go on your skin. And no, an SPF 30 does not let you sunbathe for 30 times longer. SPF protection depends on a variety of factors, including time of day. Choose an SPF suitable for your skin type and make sure your sunscreen has “broad spectrum” protection which will help to block all types of UV rays. Make sure you apply a generous amount and reapply every 2 hours no matter how long lasting your sunscreen advertises it is. Try Colorescience Sunforgettable powder sunscreen. It’s an SPF 30 in a powder form that’s waterproof, rub-proof, sweat-proof and super easy to apply. Plus there are 2 tinted shades to add a bit of color and glow to your skin. Bottom line: the days of lying out with baby oil are over. Sun damage is real, dangerous and irreversible. Be careful!
  5. Expensive skin care products are better. I am a firm believer in finding the ultimate bargain, and the same goes for my skin care. However, some of my favorite and most effective products cost a little more than others. It’s really important to read the ingredients and know what is actually in your skin care product. Look for a product with the least amount of unnecessary additives (one example: sodium lauryl sulfate is a detergent added to face cleansers to produce lather and foam. It’s really drying, strips moisture and may cause skin irritation). Familiarize yourself with which ingredients actually do what their supposed to do and how high the concentration needs to be to actually have an effect. Look for clinical skin care lines that generally have not only a higher concentration of active ingredients but also a higher grade of quality. These may cost a little more but you’re getting more bang for your buck. For example, it is scientifically proven that Retinoid, found in Retin-A, helps reduce wrinkles. But the Retinoid or Retinol listed as the sixth ingredient on that $5 moisturizer is probably not enough to have any effect. Scrimp on the products that don’t stay on your skin for too long and aren’t being used for long term effects on your skin. Use an inexpensive blush but splurge on that anti-aging, anti-wrinkle serum. IS Clinical is a brand I trust. It costs a little more but the line contains high grade, high potency ingredients that really do what their supposed to. The IS Clinical Active Serum is a great example and since you only use a few drops, the 1oz bottle lasts a long time.

10 Steps to Clear Skin

With all of my product and lifestyle research throughout the years, I now know what keeps my skin clear and acne free. Here are some tips and products I have used that give results.

  1. Don’t pick! This is the first rule of thumb. Picking your skin, especially with bare, unwashed hands, will defeat the effects of any healing products or healthy lifestyle changes you may be doing. Picking your skin with bare hands may lead to small cuts and tears from your nails, and dirt is easily passed from your hands to your skin, thus creating breakouts. Remember, if you pick one zit, you will have 5 more!
  2. Keep it simple. Using too many harsh products on your face can dry out your skin, creating peeling, redness and breakouts. You may think that using that 10% Benzoyl Peroxide every night is helping, but if your face is irritated you will only break out more.
  3. Always wash your face at night. ALWAYS! No excuses on this one. Your face collects so many dirt and toxins throughout the day. Mixed with makeup, this is a combination sure to lead to breakouts. If you do one thing to keep your skin clear, just take a few minutes to wash everything off at the end of the day. If you are too tired, then do it as soon as you get home before you start relaxing. If you are not in the habit already of washing your face at night, I promise you results from doing this one simple thing.
  4. Use a cleanser with Salicylic Acid. Salicylic acid fights acne by killing bacteria and lessening sebum. DDF Blemish Foaming Cleanser does a great job of cleaning off makeup, contains acne fighting ingredients, and is mild enough to use morning and night. For oilier skin, try DDF Salicylic Wash. This cleanser contains a higher percentage of Salicylic Acid for more intense acne fighting, but it may dry out your skin. If you experience any dryness or irritation, switch to using this cleanser only at night and a milder cleanser in the morning. Remember to wash your face twice at night to remove all makeup! A great cleanser to use in the mornings if you have more sensitive skin is IS Clinical Cleansing Complex. Containing both salicylic acid and glycolic acid, this cleanser fights acne, gently exfoliates your skin, and is gentle enough not to dry out your face. This cleanser does not remove makeup that well, so that’s why I recommend using it in the mornings and a stronger cleanser at night.
  5. A hydrated face is a clear face. You have all heard that drinking water helps clear your skin and this is not a myth. Not only does drinking lots of water cleanse your body of unwanted toxins, but it also helps to detoxify your skin and add needed moisture.
  6. Along with drinking water, using a moisturizer is very important. Even if you have oily skin, a moisturizer helps to keep your skin from becoming irritated and actually helps even out the production of oil, thus leading to less breakouts. There are a lot of moisturizers for oily skin, but I like Peter Thomas Roth Ultra Lite Oil-Free Sunblock SPF 30 because it’s super sheer, blends in really well, and also contains an SPF 30, which is so important! Don’t be afraid that using a moisturizer will make you break out. So long as you stick to an oil free moisturizer your skin will have less irritation and dryness which means less break outs.
  7. Use mineral makeup. My favorite is Colorescience for it’s superior ingredients compared with other mineral makeups. Colorescience foundation covers imperfections really well without being shiny and heavy. Best of all, because Colorescience contains no talc or additives, it’s actually good for your skin. Colorescience makeup does not penetrate your skin so it won’t clog pores and cause breakouts, and soothing minerals along with vitamin A soothe and eliminate skin irritation.
  8. Use a topical acne fighter at night. Hands down, the best acne remedy is IS Clinical Active Serum. If you’ve read my blog before, you know how much I like this product! Active serum is a liquid that you put on with your fingertips at night, avoiding the eye area. Active serum contains Salicylic acid and Glycolic acid to fight acne, kill bacteria and exfoliate dead skin, and Kojic and Lactic acid for superior anti-aging benefits. Also assisting in pigment reduction, this product does it all! Don’t use any other product on your skin after using Active Serum on clear skin. Active serum is best used alone to avoid irritation. If your face becomes dry, then you can wear a moisturizer such as IS Clinical Hydra Cool on top, once the Active Serum has dried on your skin. Hydra Cool is a cooling, serum moisturizer that contains Menthol, which is anti-bacterial. Hydra Cool is designed to work in conjunction with Active Serum and other IS Clinical products to help them work better.
  9. Use a sulfur mask. My personal favorite is DDF Sulfur Therapeutic Mask. Sulfur is well known to absorb oil, purify skin and pores and is a great anti-inflammatory. Sulfur is so healing it actually helps to instantaneously dry out blemishes and prevent more from coming. Apply a thick layer all over your face and neck, avoiding your eye area, 1-3 times per week. For severely acneic and oily skin, you may use this mask every day, but if your skin gets too dry, decrease frequency. Don’t let this mask dry out on your face, wash it off with warm water after no more than 10 minutes. DDF Sulfur Therapeutic mask will also help to gently exfoliate dead skin cells, leaving skin super clean, calmer and radiant.
  10. Get facials. If you can afford it, get a good, deep cleaning facial once a month. Otherwise, getting a facial once every couple, or every 6 months will definitely help. A facialist can deep clean your skin and clean out pores using professional grade products and equipment, plus they have the skills to really get in there without damaging your skin. Don’t get anything too frou frou, make sure that your facialist does extractions and a glycolic peel is excellent for less sensitive skin. It’s not worth spending the money unless you walk out of the spa with unclogged pores and balanced skin.

Remember, keep your skin clean, keep your hands away from your face, and use high quality, oil free, products. A simple regimen consisting of skin beneficial products and keeping your skin free from irritation leads to clear beautiful skin!

Best Women’s Perfume

Hands down, Trish McEvoy #9 Blackberry and Vanilla Musk is my favorite scent. This perfume is a wonderfully luscious blend of fruity blackberry and sensual vanilla with just a hint of musk. I’m allergic to so many scents, but I just can’t get enough of Trish McEvoy’s #9! One spray is not enough for me and I usually spray myself 4-5 times, but this scent never becomes overpowering or strong.

Even on an airplane or in hot weather (I’ve tried both), this scent is pleasant and sexy. Blackberry and Vanilla Musk is the perfect combination of fresh fruit, sweet vanilla and a mild second layer of musk. Not only will you love this scent, but men love it too! I’ve been stopped in public just to be told that I smelled good. For the size, the price will not break the bank, and won’t keep you from spraying yourself multiple times throughout the day.

This perfume smells so good I actually look forward to spritzing myself. Therefore I vote Trish McEvoy #9 Blackberry and Vanilla Musk the best women’s perfume!

Beauty’s Best 7 of 2007

  1. Revitalash – This has got to be at the top of every best product list. Revitalash helps to grow your lashes and it really works! It’s about time someone came up with a product like this… and it’s my number one best product of 2007!
  2. Seven for All Mankind High Waist Jeans – Finally a jean a girl can move in! Thank goodness for Seven for All Mankind jeans, who continuously design jeans that are figure flattering as well as sexy. These jeans have an 8.5” rise so they are not too high waisted, but boast a slightly higher waistline then the usual low-rider jeans so they are comfortable and don’t show your underwear when you bend over! Best of all, your ass still looks great in them.
  3. IS Clinical Youth Complex – The name says it all. This product is your one-stop shop for anti-aging. Containing clinical grade ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid, Retinol and Vitamin B5- to name a few- this product will truly help you get your youth back! Youth Complex prevents wrinkles, but also smoothes out existing fine lines and wrinkles both immediately and with long-term results. It’s also super moisturizing so it’s wearable in the day time. It’s the perfect non-surgical solution!
  4. Deva Curl Set it Free spray gel mist – I’ve mentioned this product before but it has to make my best list because I can’t live without it! This spray gel create perfect curls without any crunchiness or heaviness because it’s alcohol free. If you choose one thing for your curls, choose this product!
  5. MAC Fluidline gel eyeliner – This product makes lining your eyes super easy. I use the color Rich Ground, which is a slightly bronze brown shade. Just take an angled eyeliner brush, dip it in the pot, and swipe a fluid straight line onto your lids. Fluidline dries to a beautifully pigmented shade and does not rub off or fade at all! There are a lot of gel liners on the market, but I tend to stick with MAC products for their quality and low cost.
  6. Gillette Venus Breeze 2 in 1 razor – This truly makes shaving your legs a Breeze! With two super hydrating shave gel bars on either side of the blades, there’s no more need to use a second shaving gel. This razor lubes up your legs for a pass with the 3 blade razor and then follows it up with swipe of moisturizing gel- in just one step!
  7. Desert Essence Thoroughly Clean Face Wash with Organic Tea Tree Oil and Awapuhi – Go Green! This super price friendly face cleanser is one of the best I have ever tried. With all organic ingredients, and absolutely no foaming solvents or additives, this wash gets your skin really clean, the natural way. Desert Essence face wash contains tea tree oil, a natural antiseptic which controls blemishes, while still being PH balanced and gentle for everyday use. Try it and feel better about not using anything artificial or harsh on your delicate skin – at this price you can’t lose!

Best Lash Primer

lash primer

In my quest to search for the perfect mascara, I discovered MAC Prep and Prime Lash primer. MAC Prep and Prime really does what it’s supposed to. This lash primer goes on white and dries to almost clear and helps your mascara stick and build to your lashes. And best of all, it helps to make your mascara last longer too! I tested this product, and put it on underneath my Diorshow Unlimited mascara. MAC Prep and Prime made my mascara last through the gym and a long, hot day. I’ve gotten so used to the thick, full lashes MAC Prep and Prime help to give me that I can no longer wear just mascara alone. MAC Prep and Prime not only works, but costs half as much as Lancome’s lash primer. You can wear MAC Prep and Prime under any kind of mascara and you don’t have to let it dry before applying mascara on top.
